Some ask, Can I really have a conversation with God and know the joy of talking with God? My answer is a big YES! In this post, I share what my own conversations with God are like, the joy it brings, and how you can experience the blessings of the same daily joy.
Who is God?
First of all, let us be clear about who God is. To answer our question, God is the name given to a divine Family also called “the Godhead” (Acts 17:29) in the Bible. This Family, the Godhead, consists of three Persons who each are “without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life.” Hebrews 7:3.
If you are wondering what is meant by “Acts 17:29” and “Hebrews 7:3,” it is what is called Bible notation which is a way of referencing the Bible. The Bible is a collection of books, where each book in the Bible consists of one or more chapters, and each chapter has numbered sections called verses. The quotation referred to as “Acts 17:29” is taken from the book titled Acts in the Bible, the 17th chapter, and the 29th verse.
Now the Godhead has three members and, No, there are not three Gods! For these members of the Godhead never contradict each other at any time. In other words, they speak with one voice, and so we can say, “there is one God.” Mark 12:32.
What are the names of these three Persons in the Godhead? Their names are “the Father” (Matthew 11:27), “the Son” (Psalm 2:12) also called Christ (Matthew 1:1), and “the Holy Spirit” (Psalm 51:11).
Is God good? Well, God speaking of Himself, says that He is “God, that cannot lie” (Titus 1:2) and “God is love.” 1 John 4:8. That is to say that each member of the Godhead has a character of love that is identical to that of the others.
Our Bible Verse of Focus
Here is our Bible verse of focus in this post: “Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.” Psalm 63:3.
This verse sums up what it is to know the joy of talking with God. For it says that no matter what our circumstances in life, and even in the face of death, we can praise God for His lovingkindness.
When I first came across this verse in the Bible, and when God started to give me this verse over and over again during prayer, this was not true of me. So, I began to ask God to give me a change of heart so that I could know for myself this joy of talking with God about death.
By the end of this post, you will see how God has done a marvellous work in my heart so that this is now true of me. I hope that this snapshot of my journey to having the ultimate joy of talking with God will show you how you can have this joy yourself, if you do not already have it.
Humanity Loses Face-to-Face Access to God
God created the first human pair, a man named Adam and a woman named Eve, with a character of “perfect love” (1 John 4:18) which was identical to God’s character of love.
And being fully approved by God, Adam and Eve had face-to-face access to God and they knew the joy of talking with God. However, Adam and Eve fell into sin, which is evil and wrongdoing, by yielding to the temptation to sin from an angel named Satan.
Who is Satan? He is an angel who rebelled against God in heaven and who caused other angels to join in his rebellion. And because Satan and his “evil angels” (Psalm 78:49) refused to stop sinning, God cast them out of heaven.
Now all Adam’s and Eve’s descendants have inherited their disposition to sin and so, the entire human race has also lost this face-to-face contact with God.
Moreover, the whole human race is destined for eternal death (annihilation) from God because of their sins. But don’t despair just yet, for there is good news! “For the wages of sin is [eternal] death [which is to be annihilated by God]; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23.
Who is Jesus Christ? He is Christ, the member of the Godhead, who was born as a baby boy on earth named Jesus over 2,000 years ago. Jesus Christ died “for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2) and, therefore, all humanity can have eternal life, if they meet God’s conditions of repentance (deep sorrow and remorse for sin) and faith in Jesus Christ.
Those who receive eternal life from God, “they shall see his [God’s] face” Revelation 22:4. That is, they will once again have face-to-face access to God and know the joy of talking with God in person.
Why Is It Important to Talk to God?
Almost everyone has at some time or the other wondered, Why it is important to talk with God?
Well, God says, “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD [God]: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be [white] as wool.” Isaiah 1:18.
“Seek ye the LORD [God] while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6. For “the wicked, through the pride of his countenance [of his face], will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.” Psalm 10:4.
Thus, God invites us, and He even commands us, to come to Him. Why? So that we can come to know the joy of talking with God, the joy of our broken relationship with God being mended.
Is Talking to God the Same as Praying?
You may be wondering, Is talking to God the same as praying? Well, consider what God says, “And it came to pass…she continued praying before the LORD…Now…she spake in her heart…[and] her voice was not heard.” 1 Samuel 1:12, 13.
Clearly then talking to God is the same as praying. Note, however, that God says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Jeremiah 33:3. Therefore, prayer is intended by God to be a two-way communication and this is how you can come to know the joy of talking with God.
Now God “he forgetteth not the cry of the humble” (Psalm 9:12), but “thou [God] hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments.” Psalm 119:21.
That is, only those who approach God in humility can know the joy of talking with God.
Can I Just Talk to God?
Again, you may be asking, Can I just talk to God? Well, consider what God says, “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.” Acts 17:24, 25.
“And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord, if haply [perhaps] they might feel after [search for] him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being…for we are also his offspring.” Acts 17:26-28.
We see then that God desires that every human being should search for Him and, thus, come to know the joy of talking with God. So, it is fine to just talk to God because this is the way to establish a loving relationship with God.
What are the Ways That God Speaks to Us?
Now God speaks to us in several ways, but God never contradicts what the Bible says. This is an important point to grasp, for humanity has enemies in the persons of the angel named Satan and his evil angels who always seek to cause us to do evil.
God Speaks to Us Audibly on Rare Occasions
“And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh [humanity] is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” Genesis 6:13.
(Just a note here: God did destroy the earth with a worldwide flood because of humanity’s wickedness, but God saved Noah, who was a righteous man, and his family. Thus, we are all descendants of Noah, who is a descendant of the first human pair that God created—a man named Adam and a woman named Eve.)
So, it is true that God will speak to us audibly but this only happens on rare occasions. Happy are those indeed to whom God speaks in an audible voice! Such people, if they approach God with humility, can come to know the joy of talking with God.
God Speaks to Us Through Dreams
There was a time when “in Gibeon the LORD [God] appeared to [king] Solomon [of ancient Israel] in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.” 1 Kings 3:5.
King Solomon answered God in his dream “and the speech pleased the Lord [God], that Solomon had asked this thing.” 1 Kings 3:10.
We see then that God sometimes speaks to us through dreams and it’s a blessing to know the joy of talking with God in a dream.
God Speaks to Us Through Visions
Now God says, “After these things the word of the LORD [God] came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” Genesis 15:1. Thus, Abram (later called Abraham) had a conversation with God.
What is a vision? It is supernatural mental imagery from God, typically given when one is awake. Again, it is a blessing to know the joy of talking with God in a vision.
God Speaks to Us by Impressing Our Minds with His Thoughts
God says that some people can say of themselves in truth, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world [which is Satan], but the [Holy] spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:12.
“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost [Holy Spirit] teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” 1 Corinthians 2:13.
How does the Holy Spirit teach us? Most often by impressing our minds with His thoughts.
Now, just like when God speaks to us in a dream or in a vision, we can know the joy of talking with God in our thoughts.
God Speaks to Us Through His Word, the Bible
God also speaks to us through the Bible. For God says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine [teaching], for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished [fully equipped] unto all good works.” 2 Timothy 3:16, 17.
Our response to the Bible should be “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103. Here then is represented, symbolically, the joy of talking with God through the Bible.
God Speaks to Us Through Nature
Now God also speaks to us through nature. For God says, “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.” Job 12:7, 8.
“Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:9, 10.
That is, nature delights our senses and speaks to us the things of God so that we know the joy of talking with God.
God Speaks to Us by His Providence
Let us now consider God’s providence which is God’s care, guardianship, and directing of our lives.
God says, “And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.” Esther 2:17.
Thus, in God’s providence, Esther became queen of ancient Medo-Persia. And it came to pass that a plot was made to kill all the Jews in the Medo-Persian empire, and Esther herself was a Jew, something the king did not know.
Therefore, Esther’s uncle, Mordecai referring to God’ providence, said to Esther, “For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14.
We see then that God is silently directing the affairs of human lives, and if they choose to follow where God leads they will be blessed. Here then is a reason to desire to know the joy of talking with God in songs of praise and thanksgiving to God for His leading in our lives.
How Can I Hear God’s Voice?
God says that all humanity should be able to say of themselves in truth, “I waited patiently for the LORD [God]; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.” Psalm 40:1.
This means that when we pray to God and desire to hear from God, if we are in a rush, we will often fail to hear God’s “voice” speaking to us. Hence, we will fail to know the joy of talking to God.
The Joy of Talking with God About Emotional Hurt and Pain
I have said to God, “He [God] healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3.
Why did I say this to God? Because God has done this for me, for which I am exceedingly grateful to God, and I acknowledge God’s blessing. So, I know the joy of talking with God about emotional hurt and pain.
You too can bring all your hurt and pain to God and He will do the same for you, filling you with joy.
The Joy of Talking with God About Salvation
Now what is salvation? It God’s saving of humanity from eternal death (annihilation) and instead giving us eternal life.
God has said to me regarding salvation, “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” Isaiah 12:3. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights [the Father of all the holy, intelligent beings in the universe], with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning [not like the changing shadow cast by the sun].” James 1:17.
In turn, I have said to God, And every man [person] that hath this hope [of salvation] in him [Christ] purifieth himself, even as he [Christ] is pure.” 1 John 3:3.
And, acknowledging, the work of God in human lives to change their hearts from selfishness to perfect love, I have said to God, “I [God] am sought of them that asked not for me; I [God] am found of them that sought me not: I [God] said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation [people] that was not called by my name [because they were evil].” Isaiah 65:1.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God about salvation. You can know this joy too for the Bible is full of much that God says about salvation.
The Joy of Talking with God About How God Sees Me
God has said to me, “As the truth of Christ is in me [God], no man [person] shall stop me [God] of this boasting in the regions of Achaia [the earth].” 2 Corinthians 11:10. For God boasts about the people on earth who walk in His ways of love to the holy angels and to the other intelligent beings in the universe.
“For I [God] am jealous over you [my people] with godly jealousy: for I [God] have espoused you [promised you in marriage] to one husband [Christ], that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:2.
So, I have acknowledged God’s approval and said to God, “Beloved, now are we the sons [children] of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2.
This then is how God sees His people on earth and I know the joy of talking with God about how God sees me. You too have this joy for there is much that God says about humanity in general, the wicked, and God’s people in the Bible.
The Joy of Talking with God About His Character
I have said to God regarding God’s character, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men [people] should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets [this is the whole Bible].” Matthew 7:12. This is the golden rule of God for the universe and God Himself lives according to this rule. Isn’t that wonderful of God?
And God has said to me, “Righteous art thou, O LORD [God], and upright are thy judgments.” Psalm 119:137.
I have also said to God, “But he [God] is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.” Job 23:13.
“For with stammering lips and another tongue will he [Christ] speak to this people [to humanity].” Isaiah 28:11. That is to say, with words spoken in tears and with holy speech God speaks to humanity. For God is heartbroken that many people refuse His gift of a change of heart from selfishness to perfect love and, hence, God has no other choice but to annihilate them.
This then is the joy of talking with God about His character for God seeks to win our love through His words in the Bible. Not sure if you can trust God at all times? Pray to God and know for yourself the joy of talking with God about His character.
The Joy of Talking with God About God’s Government in Heaven
Jesus Christ has said to me, “For I [Jesus Christ] am a man [a God] under [the] authority [of the Father], having soldiers [angels] under me: and I say to this man [this angel], Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.” Matthew 8:9.
Thus, God has spoken to me about the nature of His government in heaven and, thus, I have had the joy of talking with God about this. When you pray to God then He will give you an understanding of His government in heaven and you yourself can have the joy of talking with God about this.
The Joy of Talking with God About His Deliverance from Evil
God has said to me, “He [God] brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me [from demons who are Satan and his evil angels], because he delighted in me.” Psalm 18:19.
“For the oppression of the [spiritually] poor, for the sighing of the [spiritually] needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD [God]; I will set him in safety from him [Satan] that puffeth at [speaks evil against] him.” Psalm 12:5.
“He [God] maketh my feet like hinds’ [deer’] feet, and setteth me upon my high places.” Psalm 18:33. In other words, God has blessed me abundantly and, so, I know the joy of talking with God about His deliverance from evil.
Now the spiritual world is invisible to our eyes, but God will pull back the veil and reveal it to you when you pray to Him sincerely. Thus, you can have the joy of talking with God.
The Joy of Talking with God About My Character
I have said to God, there shall be “no complaining” (Psalm 144:14) from me about anything for you God have given me peace.
And God has said to me that this is what I should sincerely pray, “Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression [wickedness].” Psalm 19:12, 13.
Also, God has said, “Look to yourselves [fellow Christians, the followers of Christ], that we lose not those things which we have wrought [we have achieved in overcoming sin], but that we receive a full reward [of eternal life from God].” 2 John 1:8. “For all his [God’s] judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.” Psalm 18:22.
Moreover, God said to me, “For I [God] rejoiced greatly, when the brethren [the angels] came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth [of God].” 3 John 1:3. “It is good that a man [a person] should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.” Lamentations 3:26.
So, I have known the joy of talking with God about my character and you can too when you seek God.
The Joy of Talking with God About His Work to Save Me
God has spoken to me, declaring the language of my heart which God knows full well, “It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect [in love].” Psalm 18:32.
“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk [the way I should live]; for I lift up my soul unto thee.” Psalm143:8.
In turn, I have requested of God knowing that this is God’s will, “Sanctify them [make humanity holy] through thy truth: thy word [the Bible] is truth.” John 17:17.
Thus, God has given me the joy of talking to Him about His work to save all humanity, including me. Likewise, God will give you this joy too as He tells you of His work in your life to save you from eternal death (annihilation) when you pray to Him.
The Joy of Talking with God About Spiritual Warfare
God has said to me, “For by thee [God] I have run through a troop [of demons]; and by my God have I leaped over a wall [to escape them].” Psalm 18:29.
“He [God] teacheth my hands to war [against Satan and his evil angels], so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.” Psalm 18:34.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God about spiritual warfare for it is God who equips us to war against demons. God will give you this joy too when you pray to Him.
The Joy of Talking with God About Temptations
While I was in prayer, God has said to me that this should be the language of my heart, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers [various] temptations [to sin]; knowing this, that the trying [testing] of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting [lacking] nothing [in your godly character].” James 1:2-4.
When I first read this in the Bible and when God started to say this to me, I was perplexed. Joy? How can one have joy in the face of temptations to sin?
But God made me to understand that we develop spiritual strength when we are tested by temptations to sin. This moral strength, when fully developed in us, gives us victory over all temptations to sin so that we receive eternal life from God.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God about temptations to sin, and God will give you this joy too if you seek Him.
The Joy of Talking with God About Spiritual Blindness
God has said to me, “Therefore speak I [God] to them [those who cling to their sins] in parables [short stories giving a moral lesson]: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.” Matthew 13:13.
Thus, God refers to the spiritual blindness of those who do not seek to live according to His ways of love. This is sad, but by saying so God has warned me not to follow others in their evil ways.
Why does God speak in parables? Because if God spoke to such people bluntly and frankly about their inward moral corruption, most likely He would antagonise them and cause them to harden their hearts against Him. But by speaking to them in parables then, God can gain their attention and interest in the stories and possibly cause them to understand and accept the moral lessons that He gives.
So, then God has given me the joy of talking with Him about spiritual blindness as I am happy to have been warned by God. Pray to God sincerely and God will cause any spiritual blindness that you may have to vanish away leaving you holy and abounding with joy.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Gospel Commission
God has said to me, “Go ye also into the [spiritual] vineyard [which is the world, to win persons to Christ], and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.” Matthew 20:4.
In turn, I have said to God, “And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you.” 2 Corinthians 12:15. “For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain [win] the more [to Christ].” 1 Corinthians 9:19.
God has also said to me, “But this I say, He which [symbolically] soweth [the gospel seed which is God’s plan of salvation] sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which [symbolically] soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” 2 Corinthians 9:6.
“Whiles [For] by the experiment [proof] of this ministration they [those who are blessed by it] glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men.” 2 Corinthians 9:13.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God about His gospel commission to all who follow His ways of love. This is the most important work in the world and, if you pray to God sincerely, you too can have the joy of talking with God about His sending you into his spiritual vineyard.
The Joy of Talking with God About Love
While in prayer, God has said to me, “And this is love, that we walk after his [God’s] commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.” 2 John 1:6.
So, God has pointed out to me that I should live according to His ways of love and, hence, I have found the joy of talking with God about love. You too can know this joy as you seek to live in love just as God has commanded.
The Joy of Talking with God About His Mercy
I have said to God, “And you [the true Christian] hath he quickened [made spiritually alive], who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air [who is Satan], the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” Ephesians 2:1, 2.
“Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh [of our sinful nature], fulfilling the desires of the flesh [of the sinful nature] and of the mind; and were by nature the children of [God’s] wrath [fury against such evil], even as others.” Ephesians 2:3.
“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22, 23.
Hence, I have known the joy of talking with God about His mercy toward the human race. Pray to God sincerely and God will cause you to have the same joy.
The Joy of Talking with God About His Leading
I have said to God, “Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost [Holy Spirit] to preach the word [of God] in [the Roman province of] Asia, after they were come to Mysia, they assayed [tried] to go into Bithynia: but the [Holy] Spirit suffered them not [did not permit them].” Acts 16:6, 7.
“And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed [entreated] him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord [God] had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.” Acts 16:8-10.
This is the story of God’s leading in the lives of some godly men, and I have had the joy of talking with God, asking Him to lead me in the same manner. If you desire to be led by God, pray about it and you too can come to know the joy of talking with God about this.
The Joy of Talking with God About Prayer
In prayer, God has said to me, “And this is the confidence that we have in him [God], that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he [God] heareth us: And if we know that he [God] hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” 1 John 5:14, 15.
In turn, I have said to God, “Save, LORD [God]: let the king [God] hear us when we call.” Psalm 20:9. “Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.” Psalm 28:9.
And I, speaking with confidence in my having God’s ear, have said to God, “Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria [against Satan] I have heard.” 2 Kings 19:20.
Thus, I have had the joy of talking with God about prayer. Seek God yourself and you too shall have this joy.
The Joy of Talking with God About Praise
God has said to me, “Praise him [God] for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.” Psalm 150:2.
Here God is saying that His blessings upon me personally, and upon humanity, should cause my lips to be unsealed to pour forth praise to God. And I do praise God for all His goodness toward me and others.
Therefore, I have had the joy of talking with God about His praise. Pray to God sincerely and you too will have this joy and will praise God.
The Joy of Talking with God About Self-Examination
While I was in prayer, God said to me that He knew that this was the language of my heart, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting [in God’s everlasting ways of love].” Psalm 139:23, 24.
So then, I have had the joy of talking with God about my heart’s desire that God would closely examine me and lead in the way to eternal life.
The Joy of Talking with God About His People
God has said to me, “But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I [God] create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem [a symbol of all of God’s true followers] a rejoicing, and her people a joy.” Isaiah 65:18.
Here God is pointing out that it is only as a result of God’s work in human lives that they can become holy, so that God can rejoice over them.
So, this then is my joy of talking with God about His people who are God’s true followers. Seek to become one of God’s true followers by turning away from all your sins, and you can have the joy of knowing that God rejoices over you too.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Resurrection
In my prayer, God has spoken to me the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.” Isaiah 26:19.
Here God is speaking of His promise to resurrect, that is to say, raise to life again from the dead, all those of His true followers who have died, to live with Him eternally. This is indeed a comfort to know of God’s promised reward to the righteous.
I have, therefore, had the joy of talking with God about the resurrection and you can too if you seek God with all your heart.
The Joy of Talking with God About Speech that Blesses
I have said to God, “And he [Jesus Christ] commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.” Matthew 14:19. In this way, Christ fed five thousand men, besides women and children.
Here I have asked God to do this same miracle for me. That is, I desire that when I as a Christian come to God for words to speak in sharing the gospel, it will be as if God gave me the words so that they were as spiritual bread blessing many persons.
Thus, I have had the joy of talking with God about speech that blesses, and you can too if you ask God wholeheartedly to give you the words to speak to win others to Christ.
The Joy of Talking with God About His Wisdom
I have said to God, “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before [have reverence for] him.” Ecclesiastes 3:14.
“And she said to the king [symbolically, said to God], It was a true report which I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom: Howbeit I believed not their words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the one half of the greatness of thy wisdom was not told me: for thou exceedest the fame that I heard.” 2 Chronicles 9:5, 6.
Here I am acknowledging that God’s wisdom is far greater than the wisdom of all the intelligent whom beings God has created. And when I get to heaven (for I plan to be there with God eternally) I will discover that the half has not been told.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God about His wisdom and you can too when you get to know God as you should.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Conversion of Unbelievers in God
God has said to me, “In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD [God] of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.” Isaiah 19:18.
Here God is speaking symbolically that, in God’s judgment day, many who were formerly unbelievers will become true believers in God and will, therefore, speak the pure, holy language of the heavenly Canaan, which is heaven itself. This is indeed good news!
Unfortunately, there will be those people who have permanently rejected God’s ways of love and who will, therefore, receive eternal death (annihilation) from God.
Thus, I have had the joy of talking with God about the conversion of unbelievers in God. If you seek God with your whole heart, God will also speak to you about His work on earth so that you can have this joy too.
The Joy of Talking with God About Obedience
I have said to God, “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD [God] as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD [God]? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken [heed God’s words] than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22.
“He that hath my [Christ’s] commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me [Christ]: and he that loveth me [Christ] shall be loved of my Father, and I [Christ] will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:21. “Jesus [Christ]…said…If a man love me [Christ], he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode [dwelling place] with him.” John 14:23.
“Thy [God’s] word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee [God].” Psalm 119:11.
And God has said to me that this is the language of my heart, “Consider how I love thy precepts [moral instructions]: quicken me [make me spiritually alive], O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.” Psalm 119:159.
“Incline my heart unto thy testimonies [the Bible], and not to covetousness. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me [make me spiritually alive] in thy way [in God’s ways of love].” Psalm 119:36, 37.
Here I have had the joy of talking with God about my obedience to God, for wickedness causes misery and distress at all times. You too can have the joy of talking with God about your own obedience to God if you seek God with your whole heart.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Word of God, the Bible
God has said to me, “But strong meat [solid food] belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14.
In turn, I have said to God, “I [God] give to eat of the hidden manna [with bread from heaven].” Revelation 2:17. “The people asked, and he [God]…satisfied them with the bread of heaven.” Psalm 105:40. “He [God]…fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock…I [God] have satisfied thee.” Psalm 81:16.
Here my conversation with God is about the word of God, the Bible, as spiritual food that makes one spiritually wise so that one is saved to eternal life.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God about the word of God, the Bible, and you too can have this joy for, God delights to explain His word, the Bible, to everyone who will hear Him.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Heart of Those Converted to Christ
I have said to God, “The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.” Proverbs 27:7. That is to say, every bitter experience God can turn into a blessing which is sweet to our soul.
In turn, God has said to me, “Hope deferred [the delay in seeing Christ face-to-face] maketh the heart sick: but when the desire [Christ] cometh [to the earth again], it is a tree of [eternal] life.” Proverbs 13:12.
And I have said to God, “And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD [God] liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.” 2 Samuel 15:21. Here, I am speaking to God about my devotion to Him.
So, I have said to God, “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD. I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.” Psalm 116:12-14.
Thus, I have known the joy of talking with God my own heart as someone who has been converted to Christ. You can have this joy too, if and when, you are converted to Christ.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Joy He Gives
I have said to God, “Thou wilt shew me the path of [eternal] life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:11.
Here I have had the joy of talking with God about the joy that He gives even now while I am on earth. You can have this joy too if you seek God sincerely.
The Joy of Talking with God About the Wisdom Received from God
I have said to God, “A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good.” Proverbs 16:29.
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing [they seem to be good], but inwardly they are ravening wolves [inwardly they are wicked].” Matthew 7:15.
Here I have acknowledged that God has warned us about those who would lead us away from God either by enticing us to sin, or by speaking false prophecy which is not from God.
The Joy of Talking with God About Death
I have said to God, “Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.” Psalm 63:3.
Here I am accepting what God has said in His word, the Bible, that we should esteem His lovingkindness more than our own lives, and praise God for his goodness even in the face of death.
Thus, I have had the joy of talking with God about death and you can have this joy too when you come to know God as you should.
Conclusion
In this post, our Bible verse of focus was, “Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.” Psalm 63:3.
Now we have seen that humanity lost face-to-face contact with God because of their sins, but that this will be restored to those people who receive eternal life from God. For this reason, we can rejoice, even in the face of death, expecting to be resurrected by God to live with Him eternally.
Moreover, we can rejoice that, while we do not now have face-to-face contact with God, we can absolutely have heart-to-heart conversations with God. Praise God!
I hope that what I have shared in this post about my own conversations with God has inspired you to have your own heart-to-heart conversations with God. Thus, you too can have the joy of talking with God about everything. For as demonstrated in this post, I have had heart-to-heart conversations with God through His word, the Bible.
This is not to say that we cannot use our own words when talking to God. In fact, we should, but in the Bible we can find, in God’s own words, everything we could ever wish to say to God. Thus, God guides us in our thoughts and feelings which together make up our character. So, we can say that the Bible is a character-building book.
Thus, I have had the joy of talking with God about the wisdom He gives which, if we accept it, will cause us to escape the snares of Satan designed to cause us to lose eternal life. You can have this joy too when you pray to God with your whole heart.
The Bible Teaches Us How to Obtain Eternal Life from God
“In the beginning was the Word [Christ], and the Word [Christ] was with God, and the Word [Christ] was God.” John 1:1. “And the Word [Christ] was made flesh [was born as a baby boy named Jesus], and dwelt among us [human beings], (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father).” John 1:14. Thus, Christ, whose “name is called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13) is the One who gave the whole Bible to humanity, from the Bible’s beginning to its end. Further, “God is love.” (1 John 4:8), which is to say, Christ is love.
And every one of you as a human being are to “lay apart [put away] all filthiness and superfluity [abundance] of naughtiness [of wickedness], and receive with meekness the engrafted [the implanted] word [from God, which is the Bible and], which is able to save your souls [from annihilation by God as the penalty for sin].” James 1:21. For the word of God, the Bible, being implanted in us means that “the love of God is shed abroad [is poured] in our hearts by the Holy Ghost [the Holy Spirit] which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5. So then, “love is of God; and every one [every human being] that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” 1 John 4:7. This is known as “justification” (Romans 4:25) which is accomplished by our repentance, that is, our deep sorrow for our sins and the gift of faith from God, which when exercised to believe God’s promise of forgiveness of sins and cleansing from sin brings us the gift of love from God. Note that everyone receives the gift of faith from God but without repentance people have a superficial faith and not saving (correct) faith that takes proper hold of God’s truth by the working of the Holy Spirit.
Immediately upon our justification, God tests our character to see if we will successfully resist all temptation to sin. Our success depends on our exercising faith in Christ’s keeping power through the Holy Spirit and, hence, we become sanctified (made holy) and thus receive eternal life from God.
And this is life eternal [everlasting life], that they [as human beings] might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent [to the earth as a Deliverer from sin].” John 17:3. Thus, when the whole Bible makes our character a character of perfect love, it means that we know God and, hence, we will receive eternal life from God.
